How to replace the lenses in glasses/sunglasses purchased online (prescription lenses/colored lenses)

インターネット通販で買ったメガネ/サングラスはどうやってレンズ交換すればいいのかのお話(度入りレンズ/カラーレンズ)

Hello,

We are METRONOME-Tokyo Online,

an online select shop

that handles unique items

such as the London-based glasses/sunglasses brand

METRONOME®️.

This article is written by staff member OKD.

This time,

I would like to write about

"Replacing lenses for glasses/sunglasses purchased through online mail order."

For those in a hurry: We also accept lens replacement and frame repair for glasses/sunglasses purchased from other stores or online. An eyeglass prescription is not required. Processing will be done at our factory in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture.

There are exactly three methods.

  1. Take them to a nearby optician and consult with them.
  2. Look up brand dealers and take them there.
  3. Use the shop's own online lens replacement service, etc.

To state the conclusion upfront:

3) Using the shop's own online lens replacement service, etc.

is the most recommended in terms of "accuracy."

Of course, there is no technical reason why 1) and 2) wouldn't work.

However, since they are not the manufacturer,

there is a risk that communication could become very troublesome

in the unlikely event of damage.

Basically, when bringing items to another company,

you will likely be asked by the store staff, etc.,

to acknowledge that minor scratches may occur during lens replacement.

In that regard,

with an online lens replacement service

handled directly by the online store,

responses to accidental damage are smoother.

(Because it's a direct operation, they have inventory.)

Furthermore, the affiliated factory is accustomed to handling

the shop's frames, so this also provides peace of mind.

However, due to the nature of online communication,

it may tend to take more time than face-to-face communication at a physical store.

Anyway,

let's examine each method.

First, 1) taking them to a nearby optician and consulting with them.

This seems to be a relatively easy option.

The advantage is that

large chain stores have

many directly managed branches.

If lens processing & replacement is technically OK,

they often accept products from other companies.

If the conditions are met, same-day pickup is also possible.

The disadvantage is that

regarding fees, in addition to processing costs,

there may be an additional fee for bringing in items from other companies.

Also, if it's technically not possible,

they might simply refuse the service.

(If they don't accept products from other companies in the first place,

that's the end of it...)

Nevertheless,

consultation itself is free,

so I think it's fine to just ask around.

Next, 2) looking up brand dealers and taking them there.

This method should offer more certainty

than taking them to a general store as in 1).

Among dealers, "authorized" dealers are recommended.

This is because they should have a contract with the manufacturer.

This method can be expected to be faster

and more accurate for processing than 1).

The disadvantage is that

if there is no dealer nearby,

this method is difficult to use.

Traveling far just for lens replacement

is quite troublesome, and

if you can't pick them up on the same day,

you'll have to make two trips.

(That adds considerable time cost.)

Therefore,

I believe 2) is limited to those who have a dealer nearby.

Conversely,

if there is a dealer nearby,

using them is faster and more reliable.

In the case of METRONOME-Tokyo Online,

you can find authorized dealers here.

(Still expanding!

We would be grateful if you could ask your local optician!

)

Finally,

about 3) online lens replacement.

As explained at the beginning,

although it takes a bit more time than 1) and 2),

reliability is most guaranteed.

If the frame allows lens replacement,

it is generally OK to replace them.

(* Some frames themselves are not suitable for lens replacement.

Also, for special lens shapes or

lenses larger than standard specifications,

additional processing fees may apply.)

To reiterate the advantages:

  1. Can be completed online.
  2. Directly handled by the manufacturer, so it's reliable.
  3. Adjustments and shipping are flexible.
  4. Even without an eyeglass prescription, if you send your current glasses, we can read the prescription.

Disadvantages include:

  1. Shipping costs may apply.
  2. Takes about 1 to 1.5 weeks after the frame arrives at our store.
  3. Fine-tuning face-to-face is not possible.

Among 1) to 3),

each replacement method has its pros and cons,

but a rough understanding that general stores are for speed-conscious individuals,

and online replacement is for accuracy-conscious individuals, should be fine.

For online lens replacement service when you need prescription lenses,

previously, you needed to provide an "eyeglass prescription,"

but it is no longer necessary.

If you send your current glasses along,

we will read the prescription here.

There's no need to visit an ophthalmologist or an optician.

(Of course, if you have an eyeglass prescription, you can send that as well.)

The flow of online lens replacement is as follows:

  1. Add the lens replacement service to your cart and place an order on METRONOME-Tokyo Online (if you are also replacing the frame, order it together).
  2. Send the frame and a document showing your prescription (your current glasses, or an eyeglass prescription) to our store.
  3. After the frame arrives, processing will take about 1 to 1.5 weeks. A shipping notification will be sent upon completion.
  4. The product arrives at your specified address.

That's the process.

The price varies depending on the lens prescription.

If you don't know your prescription,

please select "[Click here if you don't know the appropriate lens]" from the lens options.

We will read the prescription from your current glasses.

From this page,

select your prescription, whether you need blue light cut processing, etc.,

and proceed with payment.

Once we confirm the details, a representative will contact you.

How was that?

This time, regarding lens replacement for glasses/sunglasses

purchased through online mail order,

we introduced the online lens replacement service.

There are several methods: general stores, dealers, and online,

so please choose the method that is most convenient for you.
